In a Thursday night Florida pedestrian-motor vehicle accident, a 16-year-old was injured. The Panama City News Herald reports that police say that the female was walking through parked cars when a sports utility vehicle driven by a 19-year-old struck her. As a result, the victim suffered a broken leg and possible head trauma. Law enforcement is still investigating the accident so no formal charges have been filed.
Unfortunately, accidents between an automobile and a pedestrian are frequent occurrences and are among the most serious traffic accidents in Florida. Overall, accidents involving pedestrians resulted in estimated 4,280 deaths in the United States in the year 2010, according to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). In Florida, the number of pedestrians killed in a traffic accident was nearly 500 last year, a slight increase from the previous year, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

There are many causes of Panama City pedestrian accidents. All too often drivers of motor vehicles are distracted and many fail to see a pedestrian in front of them. In many circumstances the driver fails to stop at a crosswalk, fails to yield the right of way, or is speeding. No matter what, it is incumbent upon drivers to recognize that they owe a duty of care to pedestrians near the roadway. The fact that pedestrians are hard to see just means that reasonable care requires extra caution in situations where pedestrians are likely located.
As more individuals enjoy walking for personal or health reasons, it is of increasing importance for all travelers to understand that pedestrians have a legal right to travel on the sidewalks and roadways without being fearful of an accident. Many communities are seeking to encourage foot travel to cut back on congestion and other collateral consequences of increased automobile use. As a result of these trends it is important for increased focus to be placed on basic pedestrian safety measures to ensure more walking does not lead to more walking injuries.
